Why strings break, and how to make a set last

Breaking strings is normal if you hit with spin. Breaking them every week is a sign the setup does not fit your game.

Home / Guides / Why strings break

Common causes

  • Notching: with topspin, the mains slide over the crosses and slowly saw into them. Breaks near the middle of the mains usually mean this.
  • Frame hits: off-center hits near the top of the frame can cut string quickly.
  • Worn grommets: the plastic around the holes wears down and sharp edges cut string. Ask your stringer to check them.
  • Thin gauge: thinner string bites more and breaks sooner.
  • Soft families under heavy spin: multis and natural gut wear faster for big hitters.
  • Stringing damage: kinks or nicks during stringing can leave a weak spot.

Fixes, in order

  1. Go one gauge thicker with the same string.
  2. Put polyester in the mains and keep a softer cross (a hybrid).
  3. Move to a full poly bed, strung a bit lower.
  4. On a budget, try a synthetic gut built for wear.

Some stringers fit small string savers where strings cross to slow notching. They change the feel a little.

Lasting longer is not always better. Poly breaks less but is stiffer and can go dead before it breaks. If your arm complains, see sore arm and how often to restring.

Does breaking strings mean I am a good player?

It mostly means you hit with spin or use thin or soft string. Plenty of strong players rarely break strings on poly.

Where should a string break?

Usually in the middle of the mains from notching. Breaks at the frame edge or by a grommet often point to frame hits or worn grommets.
