Luxilon ALU Power 125 (Ice Blue)

Luxilon ALU Power 125 (Ice Blue)

ControlPoly
Overall 3.8/4

Tour-standard co-poly: crisp pocket, predictable launch, and durability that holds up when you already hit through the ball. Not an arm-rehab string — look at a multi or hybrid if the elbow talks.

  • Stiffness★★★☆
  • Spin★★★☆
  • Durability★★★★
  • Control★★★★
  • Comfort★★☆☆
  • Tension holding★★★☆

Based on: Tennis Warehouse ALU Power playtest (control/touch/durability elite; TWU stiffness ~209; comfort modest) + TW RPM vs ALU comparison. Overall 3.8 = weighted synthesis — tour control stays elite; comfort 2 keeps it under a flat 4.0.

Solinco Hyper-G 16L (1.25)

Solinco Hyper-G 16L (1.25)

SpinPoly
Overall 3.9/4

Square green edges grab hard and the launch stays honest on full cuts. TW playtesters flagged better tension hold than most shaped polys — still firm, still not for a sore arm.

  • Stiffness★★★☆
  • Spin★★★★
  • Durability★★★☆
  • Control★★★★
  • Comfort★★☆☆
  • Tension holding★★★★

Based on: Tennis Warehouse Hyper-G 16 playtest (spin/control standouts; strong tension hold; still firm). Overall 3.9 = weighted synthesis — slightly kinder than RPM on stiffness notes, but comfort 2 still blocks a flat 4.0.

Wilson NXT 17 Multifilament

Wilson NXT 17 Multifilament

ComfortMulti
Overall 4.0/4

Plush multi pocket for juniors and talking elbows. Easy depth without a board feel — you will restring more often than poly, and that is the right trade for growing arms.

  • Stiffness★☆☆☆
  • Spin★★☆☆
  • Durability★★☆☆
  • Control★★☆☆
  • Comfort★★★★
  • Tension holding★★☆☆

Based on: Wilson NXT as the long-standing comfort multi reference (TW playtest baselines + Tennis Companion comfort-led testing).

Tecnifibre X-One Biphase 16

Tecnifibre X-One Biphase 16

ComfortMulti
Overall 4.0/4

Premium multi with more pop and a crisper response than NXT. TW liked the shock absorption and tension hold for a soft string — still frays under heavy cutters.

  • Stiffness★☆☆☆
  • Spin★★☆☆
  • Durability★★☆☆
  • Control★★★☆
  • Comfort★★★★
  • Tension holding★★★☆

Based on: Tennis Warehouse X-One Biphase playtest (power/comfort strong; control lower than poly; playability duration above typical soft multi).

Solinco Tour Bite Soft 16L

Solinco Tour Bite Soft 16L

SpinPoly
Overall 3.4/4

Softest shaped Solinco we stock for BYO. Spin without ALU/Hyper-G harshness — but TW flagged poor tension hold, so restring before it goes mushy.

  • Stiffness★★☆☆
  • Spin★★★☆
  • Durability★★★☆
  • Control★★★☆
  • Comfort★★★☆
  • Tension holding★★☆☆

Based on: Tennis Warehouse Tour Bite Soft playtest (comfort/spin upsides; playability duration the clear downside).

How to choose a tennis string

Match the family to your swing, arm history, and durability needs. Then refine gauge and tension.

Polyester / co-poly

  • Full swings, spin, control
  • Firm feel; can stress the arm
  • Goes “dead” before it snaps
  • Browse polys →

Multifilament

  • Arm-friendly comfort + power
  • Plush pocket, easier depth
  • Notches/breaks sooner than poly
  • Browse multis →

Synthetic gut

  • Budget nylon comfort
  • Less pocket than a true multi
  • Synthetic gut only — we do not string natural gut
  • Synthetic gut guide →

Hybrid

  • Usually poly mains + soft crosses
  • Spin + comfort compromise
  • Buy two sealed sets, label them
  • See recipes →

Ranked picks How to choose Wildcards Gauge Tension

Junior stringing vs adult recreation

Same strings. Different job. Kids usually need comfort. Rec adults split between a plush multi and a softer poly if they already hit out. Ranked versions live on Picks.

Juniors

Comfort first. Thinner, softer multifilament. Not a full stiff poly bed. Wilson NXT 17 is what I put in a real junior racket. Growing players do not need ALU or Hyper-G to "keep up." They need the ball to come off the strings without beating up the arm.

Junior pick → · Full note →

Adult recreation

If you just want the ball in, start multi: HEAD Velocity MLT, or X-One if they want a nicer multi. If they already hit out and break soft string, a kinder poly such as Tour Bite Soft 16L is the step up. Still a poly. Still not an arm-rehab string. Full ALU / Hyper-G is for people who already hit through the ball. See 4.0+.

Sore arm / tennis elbow

String advice, not medical treatment. If the elbow is actually injured, see a clinician. From the stringer side: a full bed of ALU Power or Hyper-G is a common way rec adults make a sore arm worse.

Start here

Comfort multi. Wilson NXT 17 for kids and a talking elbow. HEAD Velocity MLT for rec adults. X-One if they want a nicer multi. You will restring more often. That is the trade. Lower tension a couple pounds if the frame range allows. See tension basics.

If you still want some poly

Hybrid, not full poly. Poly mains + multi crosses. Recipes. Do not full-bed ALU or Hyper-G "to get used to it." Tour Bite Soft is kinder than those two and still a poly. 4.0+ picks are for healthy arms that already hit through the ball. Longer sore-arm note →
